I made a series of world map lampshades and lighting designed for the shallow height of bookshelves.

These evoke the iconography of home office sets that I recall from TV in the 60s and 70s. This extends even to the current day. We used to see these in shows where Lieutenant Colombo visited and interviewed suspects. Some examples include Blueprint for Murder (1972). In Pink Panther 2006, Inspector Clouseau is seen debugging the office and spinning the globe.

Artifacts depicting world maps and old ships are more likely to be found in portrayals of substantial homes. They are often seen in impressive offices. We see these are common in set designs for the TV and the big silver screen. For me, they epitomize the inhabitant’s attempts at navigating complex strategy and convey messages about problem-solving abilities.

Decor that portrays maps might highlight deduction prowess. It’s a highly sought-after skill in business today. I often help with training in this capability.
