Using art practice to revitalise the work of managers.

What have you been working on?

I just got back from a week in Chicago. Flew out last Sunday (short unexpected stop over in Philadelphia) and returned to London yesterday on a magnificent two story airbus.

My 9 to 5 employer sent me to the US for a client conference.

What struck me, while I was there was how much my art practice gets drawn into some of the management development sessions, I lead. My appreciation for art and mark making is not just confined to my easel and paints at weekends.

My art happens everywhere

Whether it’s getting the delegates to draw and interpret their own rich pictures or by me doing live drawing of 2×2 models, dynamic frameworks or illustrations to convey a concept about management, leadership or staff motivation. I realised how my process of making a mark about someone’s expression of an already analysed reality was very present in my practice as a management and leadership development trainer/ instructor/ conference speaker. This was encouraging comfortingly familiar in my unfamiliar surroundings and certainly my epiphany for the week.

In addition to that ah ha moment, during downtime (shopping and sightseeing) I noticed how I get inspired by seeing unexpected beauty in ordinary mundane every day things.
