Elegant Lampshade for Table Lamps: Remembering How it all began

Why did I start designing and making elegant lampshades that soften our office table lamps? Here I recall three parts of a conversation forming reasons why I found it vital to begin this quest and where I am now.

In 2012, I complained to an interior design/ architect friend (I was sharing a Chelsea office with) that we saw too much hard surfaces in office decor (albeit for durability and health and safety) when organisations should be enacting the softening up to echo their espoused prioritisation for well-being and more human side of organisational life.

She recommended that I create a cover for the angle poised lamp, stating that it is an emblematic element of office decor cherished by interior designers. I must confess that I had to research Anglepoise lamps, and upon doing so, I found myself overcome with doubts. The intricacies of the arms, wiring, and the potential fire hazard posed by the materials left me hesitant to take on the challenge.

Now it seems the mighty Anglepoise lamps, themselves, couldn’t resist the allure of softening up. I mean, who could blame them? Fast forward to 2023 those sharp angles must have been feeling a bit too rigid in this modern world. So, like a yoga class for lamps, they decided to twist and turn their way into a more elegant and softer form. Just imagine the 1920s lamp doing a graceful downward dog pose. It’s enough to make you giggle! And, trust me, I’ve got the screenshots to prove it. So, get ready to witness the ultimate lamp makeover, because even inanimate objects want to look their best in 2023!

It’s seriously amazing to observe the mind-blowing transformations going on in our humble abodes. The pictures conjures up a feeling of “I’ve been here before” and cosy vibes, showcasing the rising fad of sprucing up our work areas to feel more like home sweet home. The clever parallel between offices and kitchens taps into our deep-rooted desire for a sense of togetherness and cosiness, even when we’re nose-deep in our professional pursuits. This shift demonstrates a profound realization that we crave equilibrium and bliss in all aspects of our lives. It’s a gentle nudge that we all secretly yearn for spaces that nurture both our productivity and Zen mode.

The exquisite elements incorporated into my lampshades pay homage to the timeless decor of bygone eras, dating back even a century or more. I tastefully adorned them with decorative nail trim, reminiscent of the ornate furniture commonly seen in baroque and classical European designs.
