Elvish: Hand Painted Lampshades

I’ve been admiring the other artists on Instagram who also integrate their painting or mark making onto home decor items.

I had a go and added some of my usual extra embellishments

Adding gemstones and vintage crystals to painting on lampshade fabric

Then I was not happy with the marks being made. Although I liked the embellishment idea to continue the juxtapositioning of materials.

Crystal and gold threaded hesian or burlap gives off a whimsical magical elvish vibe. Not sure whether elvish or hobbit.

I originally had discomfort and cognitive dissonance with my creation as I couldn’t understand what I had made. I was blaming my materials.

Then looking at it again I decided to reframe my thinking and go along with my elvish style capabilities.

I also gained encouragement from seeing another artist David Renggli 🎨on IG who also uses big open weave fabric to create a ghost like quality. I like how David cleverly plays with the transparency of the canvas to create a less intense saturation of colour. There is a hint that forms are presented. It is as if the painting simply whispers to you.

Inspired by watching him work with more open weave

Nevertheless my experimenting this week has taken me through other mystical magical worlds to understand how to integrate my mark making onto fabrics that intrigue me.

Hope you had an interesting week too. See you next Sunday. I shall have booked myself on a Chelsea college of art course that I’m excited to go on, by then.

Please let me know what you think. Elvish or hobbit or whether you love David’s Renggli’s open weave canvas work too.

What do you think?
